Your life will never be the same once you decide to become a doctor. That is the price you pay for treating people's illnesses.
I belong to a family of healthcare professionals. My family life was never normal. My parents find time to spend special occasions like birthdays, graduation, holidays, etc but there would always be other times that we had to cancel cause one of us had to work - emergency OR, on-call, etc.

working 40 hours a week (shift work), with no phone calls and no ability to practice privately. My wife is a pharmacist in a retail setting who works longer hours than I do. Unless I'm working night or weekend shifts, we have enough time together.
